The Mississippi State University ECE Group has continued to have a strong program in the area of power and high voltage engineering. MSU is in the top 5 funded power programs at land grant institutions within the U.S.
Expertise of the power engineering faculty includes power systems, power electronics, and high voltage engineering. The MSU Power and High Voltage Group participates in the Office of Naval Research's Electric Ship Research and Development Consortium working on developing the next generation power system for naval ships. Other consortium members include University of Texas-Austin, University of South Carolina, Florida State University, MIT, Purdue University and the US Naval Academy. The group also has worked for years for utilities within the Southeastern United States include TVA, Entergy and Southern Company.
The Power/High Voltage group has excellent simulation and hardware facilities. The High Voltage Laboratory is the largest university high voltage laboratory in North America and can do high AC and DC voltage experiments including lightning strokes. Additionally the MSU research laboratories have two racks of the Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) that allow real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing with time steps of 50 microseconds. The power electronic laboratory includes several American Superconductor Power Engineering Building Blocks. The group also has a strong set of simulation packages for shipboard, transmission and distribution power system analysis.
MSU's recent and current projects and collaborations include work with the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Department of Homeland Security, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Office of Naval Research, Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, TVA, Entergy, Southern Company, South Mississippi Electric Power Association, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories and S&C Electric.
