Mississippi State University Electrical and Computer Engineering Associate Professor John Ball and two of his students recently assisted with workshops for researchers for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

John Ball, who is also the Guyton Teaching Endowed Chairholder in the department, and his Ph.D. student Simegnew Alaba, presented two workshops to the USDA researchers in January. Tashfin Iftekhar, another Ph.D. student advised by Ball, also contributed to developing the workshop.

The first workshop was two-days and covered image processing and machine learning basics, and the second workshop lasted three days and discussed advanced concepts in deep learning. Both workshops included discussions on state-of-the-art methods, best practices, Jupyter notebook (interactive Python) examples, and an overview of Atlas, which is a multi-GPU machine for USDA research that is housed with Mississippi State University’s High Performance Computing Collaboratory (HPC2).
