Agricultural Remote Sensing: Concepts, Systems and Applications

Yanbo Huang | yanbo.huang@usda.gov

U.S. Department of Agriculture

Abstract: Agricultural remote sensing (ARS) is the backbone technology of precision agriculture (PA). It provides base data for geospatial analysis to implement site-specific agricultural management with the input at right amount and right time for optimal yield output. ARS is also a key technology to provide base information for promoting next-generation PA, smart agriculture which is driven by artificial intelligence (AI), data science and high-performance internetworking computing. This presentation will introduce the concepts related to ARS and discuss the implication of it in the context of agricultural cybernetics, which is a new engineering science for agriculture systems communication and control. Along the line, ARS systems and applications will be expanded with machine/deep learning from AI, and ARS big data will be discussed in the aspect of data management for consistent data processing, analysis, and interpretation.

Dr. Yanbo Huang is a Research Agricultural Engineer of remote sensing, artificial intelligence/machine learning, big data and high-performance computing in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service, Genetics and Sustainable Agriculture Unit at Mississippi State, Mississippi. His research interests are in the areas of precision agricultural process modeling, optimization and control, biological and remote sensing image processing and analysis, and development and application of smart agricultural information technology. Dr. Huang originated agriculture cybernetics (Agricultural Cybernetics, Huang and Zhang, Springer, 2021) and is listed in the “Top 2% of Scientists worldwide” published by the Stanford University in 2021 and 2022. Before joining USDA ARS, Dr. Huang worked at Texas A&M University at College Station, Texas and the Chinese Academy of Mechanics and Electronics Industry at Beijing, China. He has authored and co-authored over 250 scientific publications, including 3 books, 12 book chapters, and 130 peer-reviewed journal articles, and received best paper awards from numerous international journals and societies. He has served as Adjunct Professor at Mississippi State University, Texas A&M University, and Delta State University. Dr. Huang served as Editor-In-Chief of the International Journal and Agricultural Science and Technology, and the Journal of Agricultural Science and Applications, and Associate Editor of 5 other journals. He served as Panel Manager for USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) and panelist for National Science Foundation (NSF) and USDA NIFA and proposal reviewer for 10 national funding agencies in the North America and Europe. He was the President of the Association of Overseas Chinese Agricultural, Biological and Food Engineers from 2016 to 2017.
