Perspectives on Data Science from the NIH Office of Data Science Strategy

Abstract: This talk will introduce the NIH data science strategy and discuss data science efforts at the NIH as well as new efforts in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning including flagship AI programs (AIM-AHEAD, Bridge2AI). The talk will also share NIH data science programs and opportunities that are relevant to students and faculty at MSU.
Laura Biven, Ph.D. is the Branch Chief for the Data Science Ecosystem at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Data Science Strategy. In this role she is responsible for strategic planning, coordination, and oversight in cloud computing, platform interoperability, and bringing together the computer science and biomedical communities. Before joining the NIH, Laura spent 12 years at the Department of Energy (DOE), where she led strategic efforts in data management and data science including the development of the department-wide data management plan requirements, a new stewardship model for high-valued public data repositories, and new research avenues to better leverage DOE data and advance AI.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Mississippi State University consists of 23 faculty members (including 7 endowed professors), 3 clinical faculty, 10 professional and support staff, and over 700 undergraduate and graduate students with approximately 88 being at the Ph.D. level.
