February 16, 2022

Mississippi State University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Professor James E. Fowler has recently started an assignment with the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Dr. Fowler is on an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignment as a program director for the Communication and Information Foundations (CIF) program within the Computing and Communication Foundations (CCF) division of the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) directorate.

“Being an NSF program director offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with others while surveying the entire breadth of both domestic and international STEM research and education,” Fowler said. “It will offer an unparalleled opportunity to infuse my personal research program, as well as the research and education enterprises of the college and university, with new insights and experience.”

As part of his work, Fowler will assist in recommendations about funding proposals, helping influence new directions is the field, support cutting-edge interdisciplinary research, and mentor junior researchers.

Fowler said, “I feel that this will be an incredible opportunity that will be richly rewarding. I am excited at the prospect of interacting with a diverse set of high-caliber researchers outside of my narrow discipline, thinking bigger about not only new directions but also how research impacts people’s lives, and giving back to the scientific community through service as a program director.”

ECE Department Head Dr. Samee Khan said, “It is a great honor for the ECE Department to send a world-renowned expert in signal processing and information theory to serve our nation to be a Program Director at the National Science Foundation.”
